49 Mile Scenic Drive | KQED Truly CA
In 1954, celebrated graphic designer Rex May painted a seagull on a street sign and created a San Francisco icon. But now, a forgery threatens to take its place. Weaving together archival footage, Rex May's illustrious screen prints, and modern design critique, 49 Mile Scenic Drive takes the viewer on a whirlwind journey through the streets of San Francisco and begs the question: does one street sign really matter? With as many twists and turns as Lombard Street, this short film delivers history with humor. It exhibits cinema's power to create change, no matter how small. And it might just tug a heartstring or two.
A film by Bradley Smith and Tyler McPherron.

Why is there such a liberal persuasion to zines?
🙏
David and Goliath, indeed!
Beautiful memories!
A true testament to the Spirit of Laguna Beach.
Very interesting
Priceless collection of photos - a GREAT artist and photographer - THANKS DOUG!
This is so very cool, thank you!
Copyright 2014, the very year that Robin "left the building". Crazy.
This is a very nice documentary. Johnny Steele doesn't even have a wikipedia page. Take a hint dude, the time to change careers was 20 years ago and I'm spotting you 10 years to "think about it" when those clubs closed 30 years ago, my lord.
A truly great advocate. RIP 😢
I want to publish zines and rage against the machine.
Why is this only focused on visual artists? Zines can be great for anyone wanting to spread information. Patterns for fiber artists, recipes for foodies, instructions for DIY's, gardening information, advice, etc. Visual Artists are important and this is a great tool for them but I didn't see any zines about any other topic.
loading a torpedo was a particularly funny comparison
computers get hacked - - digital can be restricted - - and in a world at war networks can be shut-down. Printed messages will always be produced & distributed.
Yet another reason to fight for nationalized health care - all of these men have so much more to offer the world and yet they are reduced to getting by on nothing. Our government, with all of it's disgusting underhanded dealing, is wasting 80% of this countries potential manpower and talent shoveling money into the belly of the medical, insurance and pharmaceutical industries. Imagine a world where our OWN country gave a flying F about us and we all pulled together. It makes me furious how badly everything is run - ruined by selfishness, greed and pettiness. Excellent storytelling here - thank you.
Excellent mini-doc on zines! I could watch these ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL day.
Thank you for making this. Thank you, Doug Miller for being you - unapologetically. Life is so precious. People matter. Time goes by. Love and appreciate each other while you can.
These are AMAZING mini-docs! This channel deserves a million subs. You really busted your ass making these... and it shows. Thank you so much.
Why am I on the verge of tears? Maybe because I'm an illustrator and I'm in the middle of starting something new, I want to bring beautiful art back into the world via advertising. I want us all to FEEL something again. This makes me feel like beautiful artwork might matter again some day. Thank you for telling this story.
Doug Miller is the True Heart of Laguna Beach. He is so warm ,kind and thoughtful. I love this movie so very much Thank You Doug for showing the world what a true artist really is and what our artist colony in Laguna really truly was meant to be. I am honored to be your friend and love playing music with you . Doug is my favorite photographer my favorite artist and my favorite Laguna Beach Legend ❤️🎶
It's 4 years later and San Francisco is falling apart. Tent City Trashville. It's ripe for a Zine, call it: Poop & Needles. Explain to people in the future what happened, was your hobby stealing $900 worth of stuff from CVS or was that your new job? Was your role model Fred Flintstone or Scooby Doo? Don't forget to eat Bran Flakes cereal.
You are amazingly talented! And we miss you since we aren't there anymore!
Thanks to Algorithm I just found a lot about Zines! Such a great informative video! ❤❤❤
I've run a Riso machine before. they have multi-color machines
Love this film and all your beautiful work, Doug. Hearing you play the violin with the marimba band! Capturing people...the humanity, the beauty. (This is Tania Brunell)
Douglass was just right, I took a photo of Douglass one day, lost the film, lost the camera, did not loose Douglas, greetings from south of the border, I saw a far island and went
Hale was my friend back at UC in the early '70's. The last time I saw him was back in the late '70's or early '80's when I visited CIL with my friend Walter Wheelon, I remember hale zooming towards us in his power chair with a big smile on his face. He was my friend, not a leader or mentor (though he was those things) but my friend during the best years of my life. So many have left this world from those days, Bob, Walt, and Hale among them, others with whom I have lost touch ... I miss you all and think of you all often, those days with all of you pulled me out of my shell as we learned together how to make our own decisions and live our own lives our way, not as heroes or role models or inspirations, but as human beings.
Nice vid. ⭐️
wow this was so great <3
WOW. Some of us are just in n out n as the boX. Thank God. Yeah, it takes all kinds, and, we needs each others', but, Me, I prefer and appreciate the eclectics able to hold more than one fundemented belief at a time without being attached to dogma. May we all shine
I love to make zines too. It's so easy to make.

The relentless revolt against capitalism. It is no surprise that the movement has deep roots in the East Bay. It was when living in Berkeley that I first encountered "Buy Nothing Day," a proscriptive re-examination of Black Friday and its frenetic campaign to charge into the madness of the Christmas shopping season. Black Friday is an obvious attempt by corporate retail to manipulate an entire population into mindless consumption of unnecessary goods.
Shout out to my brother Mario Woods God bless you us and all the victims of police brutality aka current era KKK.
Mort Sahl WAS the revolution. It's upsetting how people mythologize "alternative facts", though, and pass it off as truth. The archives never lie. But, you have to put your curiosity ahead of your ego.
This was so wonderful to watch! I grew up in LB. I too thought he was the weird guy and now can’t wait to shake his hand next time I’m in town. Thank you for making this. My favorite comment was “people who come to Laguna now love the art but not the artists”. I miss the weirdness.
God I love finding new cultures I knew nothing of.
this video is amazing.
Awesome!
Beautiful film, Hale inspires everyone.
Grew up in West Covina (58' to 72'), before moving to Cambria for high school. Many weekends spent in Laguna with my parents...body surfing, and just hanging out downtown with my buddies. Wonderful memories of The Mill restaurant (sold bottles of their maple syrup with a cinnamon stick inside), an ice cream shop owned by the creator of Popeye, and Victor Hugo's on the cliffs. Thanks for the trip down memory lane Doug ✌😎
Lame
working on my first zine and I love this so much
Hi, I was wondering if you could help me with my Zine Project, please?
I LOVE ZINES
Fantastic! Hale is amazingly determined. Great job in sharing his story and how it represents so many more individuals
Great ASQ Documentary!
Truly inspirational! Thanks for sharing this.
